Poverty in many countries, even in the most wealthiest nations, exists. Hundreds of million children remain out of school and remain underweight. Those millions of children who die each year in developing countries, approximately 70 % die from transmissible diseases and malnutrition. Undernourished children are handicapped in their intellectual development, fall ill more easily and have lower physical productivity as adults. Nearly a billion people, almost all in the developing countries, do not have enough food to meet their basic nutritional needs. An increase in violent intrastate conflicts, based on hunger, religion, ethnicity, economics, territorial and/or political disputes, has resulted in complex humanitarian disasters across the globe. Many societies, who are trapped in cycles of poverty and violence, and suffered from natural disasters, have been living with fear for years.
The main reason behind creating Arts for Global Development concept lies in the will to attain development as well as the love for arts and the belief in its power in our everyday lives making a positive difference. Art does make changes in the lives of the most poorest people in the world. Art does help in creating a future free from poverty and conflict!
Art features regularly on mass media, not only in documentaries, but through advertising, graphic design on billboards, campaigns, etc. Art is applied in social systems collateral materials. Art is the theater and silver screen sector. Art combined with engineering is globally the fundament of our habitat. Art is the remedy for individual, family, community and world peace. Art along with education helps children to overcome their traumas caused by armed conflicts, strengthen their self-esteem, confidence, and tolerance. Art can provide alternative ways for troubled youth to deal with dispute and improve their attitude towards school. Arts allow individuals to explore new worlds and to view life from a creative perspective. Arts encourage individuals to strengthen their skills and abilities and to nurture their imagination and intellect to appreciate inter-cultural understanding, social justice, democracy, and good governance. The humanist and utilitarian aspirations for the arts develop different sectors and support socio-economic development. It has become a fact that any form of arts is the most versatile tool in addressing social, educational, and economic development issues in communities all around the globe.
As Michelangelo said, one paints not with the hand, but with the brain. In this information age that we are living in and where knowledge workers have become key sources for development, it is inevitable to advance the arts for today's and tomorrow's progress.
Therefore, Arts for Global Development mission is to create opportunities for arts advocates and stakeholders of development to help find new and complementary ways together to improve communities all around the world. This initiative and its interdisciplinary approach has become an important source to support the third sector and hence human development.
