the PT DC WORKSHOP

The Call/ Invitation for Participation

September 17, 2005 : USA Washington
District of Columbia Arts Center Theater

Are you an artist and you want to create an artwork for a cause? You are not an artist, but yet enjoy playing with colors and various crafts-materials to express your ideas on issues important to you, like HIV/AIDs?

You have now an opportunity to do something good in a fun way!!!

Join the Euronet International and Arts For Global Development initiative for an arts workshop. Each peace tile created by YOU will be gathered to create murals in two international sites: the Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and at a children's pediatric AIDS center in South Africa. The Peace Tiles project will also coordinate the exchange of tiles between participating communities in an effort to build solidarity and inspire hope among young people around the world that they are not alone, and that they can be heard.

The goal of this project is to raise awareness on HIV/AIDs and about the vulnerability of children and youth.

Our guest speaker is Ms. Beatrice Spadacini. Bea has worked as a communication specialist in the field of international development for the past 13 years. Among the organizations she has worked for are Amnesty International, the International Youth Foundation and the World Bank. For two years Bea was manager of the Hope for African Children Initiative (HACI), a partnership of 5 humanitarian organizations addressing the needs of children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Through her work, Bea is committed to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS in Africa and how Africans cope with it. She strongly believes that creative communication approaches - using a mix of visual and narrative tools- can contribute to this process. She also strives to alter how the news media covers Africa, seeking a more balanced approach. Bea is currently working as a press officer for CARE International and is moving to Nairobi, Kenya to cover East and Central Africa for the next two years. She has an MA in international relations and journalism from Boston University and a BA in anthropology. Her Masters' thesis focused on the role of theater in transmitting health communication messages to promote attitude and behavior change.

You don’t need to be an artist…just come as you are, and let’s paint together some peace tiles! If you want to personalize your work don’t forget to bring items like a photograph, a handwritten note or poem, a piece of colored string or cloth, a postage stamp from your country, and more. Please note the tiles will be 8-inches by 8-inches in size.
